General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defense Forces, has issued a stern warning to the current US Ambassador, stating that if the ambassador does not apologize personally to President Yoweri Museveni by Monday morning at 9:00 am for his “undiplomatic behavior,” Uganda will demand the ambassador’s departure.
However, General Kainerugaba emphasized that Uganda has no issues with the US as a country, but rather with the ambassador’s recent actions, which are perceived as working against the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government.
The US Embassy in Kampala has been engaging with local NGOs and opposition groups, which some view as an attempt to undermine the current government. Additionally, the US has imposed sanctions on Ugandan security personnel, including four senior police officers, further straining relations.
Reactions to the sanctions have been mixed, with singer-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, welcoming the sanctions, while veteran broadcaster James Onen, aka Fat Boy, criticized Bobi Wine’s stance, stating that no Ugandan leader should celebrate foreign sanctions against their own citizens.
Earlier, the General said in a post on X that the US ambassador had disrespected Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and the country’s constitution.
“Fellow Ugandans, it is my solemn duty to announce to you all that we as a nation are about to have a serious confrontation with the current US Ambassador to our country. For disrespecting our beloved and celebrated President and for undermining the constitution of Uganda,” Gen Kainerugaba posted on X today morning.
