Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba Takes Over Commands of UPDF as the New CDF

GULU: Gen Salim Saleh presided at the handover ceremony that saw Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba assume office as the new UPDF Chief of Defense Forces, replacing Gen Wilson Mbadi, who is now the State Minister for Trade.

The ceremony was held at the 4th Division UPDF Headquarters in Gulu.

During the event, Reserve Force Commander Lt Gen. Otema Awany noted the importance of the 4th Division to the entire UPDF, as most senior UPDF officers have gained invaluable military experience through the Gulu-based Division.

Gen. Kainerugaba, in his acceptance speech, thanked President Museveni for his leadership that has brought “the UPDF this far”, adding that as CDF, he will seek to build a great UPDF.

He asked the UPDF leaders present to always be a force for Africa and its people.

Gen Saleh expressed gratitude to the UPDF leadership for its continued growth and professionalism. He said that witnessing such a hand over and take over was like a movie, considering how changes in military leadership used to be in the early stages of the UPDF.

Gen Kainerugaba, known for his unwavering dedication to the UPDF, has an impressive track record. Having served in high-level positions such as Commander Land Forces and Commander Special Forces, he brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role. Lt Gen Sam Okiding, who previously served under Gen Kainerugaba as Commander Land Forces, will be his deputy.

Trained across various prestigious military academies around the world, including the UK, US, Egypt, South Africa, North Korea, China, and Uganda, Gen Kainerugaba has led successful military operations against various rebel groups. He is renowned for his zero tolerance to corruption and his commitment to improving the welfare of his soldiers through housing and training initiatives.

In additional changes made by the commander in chief, Maj Gen Jack Bakasumba will take over as Joint Chief of Staff from Maj Gen Leopold Kyanda, who is set to become a military attaché. Lt Gen Okiding, who will serve as Gen Kainerugaba’s deputy, has a successful track record in leading battles against Al-Shabaab in Somalia.

The appointment of Gen Kainerugaba signals a new chapter for the UPDF, with a strong focus on efficiency, welfare, and success in military operations. The soldiers under his command can look forward to continued support and leadership as they uphold the values of the Ugandan military.
